1995 – At some point in their lives, every artist says that a song came to them in a dream. This was mine. My father had suddenly died a few years earlier and, one night, I had a dream that he was in the recording studio with me. I remember clearly that he was commenting on the arrangements and music and, even though I was asleep, a part of me knew that he shouldn't be there. I woke up at 7am, the song and music fresh in my mind and wanted to get what I could remember recorded as soon as possible. I wrote down the chorus lyrics and as much of the verses as I could recall and, on arriving at the studio, quickly recorded the draft musical arrangement. I then called up the singers to come down to record the vocal melodies. Denise sat with me and helped me fill the gaps in the verses and the song was complete. We recorded the main vocal parts that day and Denise made some phone calls to Jennifer John's vocal agency to put together a choir for the backing section. We booked a few hours at Parr Street studios in central Liverpool a few days later. There we recorded the choir parts and mixed them off to digital tape. Back at base they were sampled and mixed into the arrangement. Some guitar parts were then added and Denise add-libbed over the track. What you listen to here is the mix from the end of that day. I always meant to go back and finish refining the track, but shortly afterwards I moved the studio to the basement at my home, which took many weeks to build, and never got around to it! One day, perhaps.
